Most of the my college friends hate writing essays. I have even accepted the fact that sometimes, they buy essays from professional writers online. They claim that essay writing is something that is too juvenile; that essay writing doesn't belong to the college curriculum. My roommate even complained that if professors insist on requiring their students to write essays, then they might as well require us to do finger painting or puppet making.
Although writing essays is usually taught as early as 4th grade English, it doesn't mean that college students have already outgrown writing essays. I've heard professors complain about how some college students have the writing skills of a 7th grader...so can you still blame them if they continuously require their students to submit essays? Besides, how else do you expect professors to assess your knowledge? As we all know, a normal college class can take from one to three hours, and a normal class size ranges from thirty to a hundred students. How else will professors get to know each of their students? Class participation is out of the question, since there are too many students in each class.
And before complaining about how insignificant essays are to your college education, ask yourself: how did you apply for your university? Weren't you required to submit an autobiographical essay about yourself? If not for those college application essays you sent out, how else will you persuade universities to let you in?
